When we see visible light, we are seeing a range of colors mixed together; from blue to red. Blue light is on the lowest side of the visible spectrum, has the shortest wavelengths, and therefore has the highest energy. Red light, on the other hand, is on the highest side of the visible spectrum, with longer wavelengths and less energy.
Blue light exposure is not entirely bad for you. The biggest source of blue light is the sun, and some exposure is vital for good health. Natural blue light is present in sun rays during the day (which is why we see the sky blue), and the lack of blue light in the evening is why sunsets appear red. Because of this, blue light regulates our sleep/wake cycle or our internal clock, and is responsible for increased energy and wakefulness (no, your coffee is not the only reason). The lack of blue light at night allows our body to naturally produce melatonin, to prepare our bodies to go to sleep.
So, why do we need to use Anti-Blue light glasses? Even though Natural Blue Light has positive effects on our bodies, we are overexposing ourselves with artificial blue light in today’s digital world. We are constantly in our computers, mobile phones, tablets, watching TV, and surrounded by LED lights, beaming Blue Light at us. Too much blue light after the sun goes down can disrupt our sleep cycle, making it harder to get a good night’s sleep and causing daytime fatigue.
In addition, our eyes are not very good at blocking blue light because of its short wavelength, and it therefore passes through the cornea and directly reaches the retina. This is the reason why your eyes feel tired when you’re working in a computer all day, or get headaches from sitting in front of a screen for long periods of time. This also means that overexposure to blue light can lead to retina damage, causing vision problems and age-related degeneration.
